Does respect for an animal's life come from a sense of 'all life being sacred'. Or is it perhaps born from more lowly origins? When survival depends on the next meal and people live with the reality of hunger and death through starvation - their dependancy on animals (or plants for that matter) is more immediate. 'Nature abhors a vacuum' - perhaps too the human mind? When any food is taken, hunger reminds us that there is no guarantee it will always be replenished. Best to get on the right side of whatever power/ spirit or entity one believes has created it! Gifts and offerings are as old as the garden - what better way to begin or cement a relationship?
From the microscope to nanotech in a handful of generations - from a flat world to a universe teeming with galaxies counted in billions - what next? Experience should tell us there's much more to be revealed - or have we reached a turning point where we've broken down, analysed and counted enough - and now's the time to figure out how to put it all back together!
I think Stuart's on the right track - no outside agent - matter that self-organizes - the universe should be able to turn out the odd prophet or two to help humanity on it's way to the stars.

I look forward to reading Stuart's book...

Interesting video. What can be known about "God" other than our own interpretation? The basis for scientific and religious thought solely rests on "truth". What is really true? How must each wolrd religion and scientist view truth? The basis for truth hinges on the life of Jesus Christ. There is no denying that Jesus did exist. We have to answer, "To what capacity did he relate truth?" Were all things created through him ? (Colossians 1:16-17)
